von Willebrand's disease is a common disorder that presents as mild bleeding including heavy menstrual periods, nose bleeds, easy bruising, and bleeding of the gums.  It is often not diagnosed until later in life unless a family member is known to have the disorder.

von Willebrand's disease is an inherited disorder and therefore, if one person in a family has been diagnosed with this, it is important for all other family members to be tested.  The testing is highly specialized and cannot be done in the state of Nevada.  For this reason, the testing usually takes about two weeks for results to become available.  The tests are best performed by a specialized center as  even minor inaccuracies in drawing or handling the blood sample can cause false reports.

There are several different types of von Willebrand's disease.  Most respond to a nasal spray composed of DDAVP.    Your doctor will need to test you with the nasal spray to make certain that you have a good response before recommending it's use.  If an increase in clotting factor activity is measured in the blood following the use of the nasal spray, then the spray may be kept at home in case of injury that may result in bleeding episodes.  It may also be useful prior to dental procedures.

Persons that do not respond to the nasal spray may respond to an intravenous form of the same medication, or factor concentrate.

Because this is an easy to control disorder, there is no reason to postpone testing.
