The Outcome of Warfarin combined with either Plavix or Aspirin, Risk of Bleeding

There are many indications where patients require warfarin and also an agent to inactivate the platelets such as aspirin or Plavix.  This is becoming more and more common.  Classically, because of the increased risk of bleeding with combination therapy, these two types of medications are not used together.  However, they may add benefit and therefore are recommended for differing disorders.

In an effort to determine the safety of combination therapy, we are evaluating all patients at our facility who have been on warfarin with aspirin, warfarin with plavix, or warfarin with aspirin and plavix.  The duration of therapy and adverse outcomes will be evaluated in order to identify the true risk of these combinations.
